How To Stay Up Late & Stay Awake In The Morning

6.18.2016

Who here has a habit to stay up late? No matter lah for what kind of reason; whether it's to binge-watch your favourite series or movie, to read a book, to study, to do a last-minute revision, finishing your assignment or simply because you can't get off your phone, because I'm the same! You would think that I would cover my sleep during the weekend or study breaks but no, my staying up becomes worse during holidays. That's the only time I have to binge-watch some TV shows I've been putting aside for such a long time and the time I can read the book in my TBR piles peacefully without getting anxious by the amount of reading I should be doing for study instead. It's not a healthy sleeping habit but I can't help myself!

So, because I know that sleeping in the class isn't so good for my exam marks soon, (read: exam result, exam) I should really find a way to stay awake in class. And I actually found some tips and want to share them with you guys, in case we're in the same team.

01: HAVE A SHORT NAP BEFOREHAND/AFTERWARDS.

This is what I always do, but it doesn't always work for me since I'm not a fast sleeper. But it might work for you! Your brain needs a rest, your body needs a break. Take a 10-20 minutes nap before you start your stay-up-late session. I would recommend you to set an alarm to wake you up. If you are that kind of people that can sleep through a numerous amount of the loudest alarms, it's better if you have someone to wake you up. Tell them to just sprinkle some water to your face or do anything until you wake up (this is what I always tell my brothers. and also what my brothers tell me to do).

If you're a very heavy sleeper, definitely don't sleep beforehand. You might end up not finishing the work you're supposed to do during the stay-up-late session. So, whatever you're doing, try to finish it fast so that you can have a short nap afterwards.

02: DO NOT HAVE A HEAVY BREAKFAST.

My Mama always says that eating nasi lemak will make you sleepy because of its huge amount of fats and it's actually true! Too much food will make you sleepy. For me, personally, I do feel sleepy after eating a huge amount of food. When you had just eaten some heavy meal, it will cause a response sent to the brain that tells the body to slow down and focus on digesting rather than go out and seek more food (which means you'll get sleepy.) I'm not sure if you understand this but yes, heavy breakfast would cause you to be sleepier than you are. So, don't have a heavy breakfast.

03: GET SOME CAFFEINE INTO YOUR SYSTEM!

Yes, Lorelai, we all can relate.
Caffeine isn't good for your health. When you're addicted to coffee, you're more likely to have a bad migraine if you don't drink it for even a day. Therefore, I really do not recommend this even when I always do this. I'm a coffee addict, everyone, don't judge me! However, if you only stay up late occasionally, then it's okay to drink coffee in the morning. It's okay to drink it occasionally but it's not very healthy to drink it every day.

04: WORK IN BRIGHT PLACES
I don't think this work for everyone but personally, I can't work in the dark especially when I'm so sleepy. It's not conducive and I will totally fall asleep. It is said that light has a powerful effect on your internal clock and bright light can temporarily fake the body into thinking it's not yet time for bed. Therefore, try to find a brighter place to work at and avoid dark places at any cost.

05: WORK YOUR MUSCLE OUT!
I never try this before but I believe that working out will totally wake you up, based on what I heard from people. Opposite to the theory saying that you will be more tired after working out, according to statistics and my observation, people who get less sleep but work out every day are more active than people who get enough sleep but don't work out. Ah, the magic of working out.

I'm sure not each tip given in this post work for everyone but I hope that everyone can benefit at least from one of the tips. If you're one of the stay-up-late squad, what's your go-to thing to stay awake in the morning?
